I wasn’t assigned to cover the 9/11 memorial. And I was glad I wasn’t - I just wasn’t feeling it. I would not have been happy in the crowds, I would not have liked the mood, and I would have taken predictable shots, written a predictable story, ended up with an entirely forgettable day’s work. So we went to see an exhibition at Lincoln Center. Other than some firemen in dress uniform going into a pub (where they didn’t have to pay for a single drink, I’ll bet) we didn’t see a sign that would have hinted at what was going on downtown. We did, however, see a lot of people going to a show for Fashion Week, and I played around them with a beautiful little Nikon P7000 point and shoot, the latest addition to our stable. I’m still not good at using it to catch fast-moving objects - such as a walking New Yorker, say - so I concentrated on the particulars.

The girl in the 1776 flag dress caught my eye, and I followed her until I had a clear shot. I wanted to go for that good old enigmatic nonface photo and after fiddling with the camera a bit I got it. So this is going to be my inevitable 9/11 flag image.

Easy method for telling Fashion Week attendees from general-issue NY’ers: shoes like these.

Wandering around the Lincoln Center plaza, looking for somewhat meaningful shoe shots. These belong to Jezebel editor Jenna Sauers. (I don’t know her. I blew up the shot and read the badge.) 

Too much shoes, not enough face? Okay. Here’s a face shot. Getting people to look at you is not as easy with a tiny p&s as it is with a huge chunk of black camera. But I’m beginning to like the ease of movement a smaller camera affords. 

And because after all you can’t have a photography blog post on this day in New York City without something Ground Zero-ish, here is the Freedom Tower, from a Tribeca rooftop, last month. It’s the big thing with white lights just right of center, under a full-ish moon.
